How the Herbst® Appliance Corrects Bite
The Herbst® appliance is a specialized orthodontic device designed to address overbite issues by promoting forward movement of the lower jaw and backward adjustment of the upper molars. This fixed appliance is commonly recommended for children in their growing years and is typically worn for a period of approximately 10-12 months.
Overbite, also known as a deep bite, occurs when the upper front teeth significantly overlap the lower front teeth. This misalignment can lead to various oral health issues, including difficulties with chewing, speech impediments, and potential jaw joint problems. The Herbst® appliance provides an effective solution by encouraging proper jaw positioning and improving the alignment of the upper and lower teeth.
The Herbst® appliance is fixed in the mouth and consists of metal rods or tubes that connect the upper and lower jaws. These rods encourage the lower jaw to move forward, thus reducing the overbite, while simultaneously guiding the upper molars backward to align them with the lower teeth. The appliance is custom-made to fit each patient’s specific needs and is adjusted by Dr. Weibel as the treatment progresses.
During the initial period of wearing the Herbst® appliance, patients may experience some discomfort or difficulty with speech and eating. However, these challenges are temporary and will gradually subside as the mouth adjusts to the appliance. Proper oral hygiene practices, including thorough brushing and regular check-ups, are essential for maintaining oral health throughout the treatment process.
