At Weibel Orthodontics, we appreciate how far orthodontic care has come, but did you know the roots of orthodontics go all the way back to ancient times? As early as 400-300 BC, historical figures like Hippocrates and Aristotle were already thinking about ways to straighten teeth and treat dental issues. Archaeologists have even discovered mummies with metal bands around their teeth, believed to be one of the first examples of ancient orthodontic techniques.
Ancient Orthodontic Practices
One early method of orthodontics involved the use of “catgut,” a natural cord made from animal intestines. This material functioned similarly to modern braces wires, helping to close gaps between teeth. Another fascinating practice came from the Etruscans, an ancient Italian civilization. They placed dental appliances on the dead to maintain tooth alignment, ensuring their teeth would remain intact in the afterlife. Additionally, Roman tombs have been found with gold wire, known as “ligature wire,” binding teeth—much like the archwires we use today. Even Cleopatra herself is said to have worn gold brackets for her teeth.
From Finger Pressure to Modern Braces
The earliest documented orthodontic treatment involved the use of simple finger pressure to realign teeth. However, due to limited dental preservation and documentation in ancient times, most of what we know about early orthodontics comes from the 17th century, when dental advancements were finally being recorded in detail.
Today, we enjoy the benefits of modern orthodontic care, which has advanced dramatically since ancient times.
